Who are we?
Reinnervate is a spin-out biotechnology company originating from research conducted at Durham University. The company was established in July 2002 to commercialise technology developed by founding scientist, Professor Stefan Przyborski, working in the field of stem cell biology and developmental neuroscience.
Our research activities are located in state of the art laboratories within Durham University whilst all product development, production and administration are located in our purpose-built facility within NETPark Incubator.
What do we do?
Reinnervate has three primary areas of interest:
- Development of equipment to enhance the growth and function of cultured cells.
This programme is focused on the development of reinnervate's patented technology for three-dimensional cell growth which closely mimics the way cells behave in the human body. This 3-D “scaffold” is set to become a vital tool in the medical and cosmetics sectors, and will lead to a significant reduction in human and animal testing due to the realistic nature of the cells created.
- Development of small molecules that mediate cell differentiation.
This programme aims to design and synthesise compounds to control cell differentiation. The characterisation of several new candidate molecules is nearing completion and a scalable manufacturing process has been optimised.
- Development of new strategies in neural stem cell research.
We have discovered that trophic factors released by cells have been found to mediate the differentiation of neural stem and progenitor cells. Current research is focussed on the identification of such factors to create new growth supplements to enhance the growth and differentiation of cultured neurons. The characterisation of such factors ultimately has the potential to lead to pharmacological approaches to mediate tissue repair.
In addition, reinnervate has been developing biomarker technology to follow the differentiation of stem cells into neural derivatives.
