Focus on Energy & Renewables: UK Biomass Industry – led by the South West?
Tue 16 Jun 2009
According to The Environment Agency, the biomass heat and power sector can play a key role in helping the UK meet its renewable energy and greenhouse gas commitments.
A recent survey has suggested that the South West has been slow to increase its renewable electricity generation but has proven itself in the move towards renewable forms of heating. The survey showed that they had increased their renewable heat energy by 36% last year alone, with extensive growth still expected.*
With tough measures in place for the European 20-20-20 targets, will other UK regions follow this path?
Biomass offers many forms of electricity and heat generation from sources including animal, plant and also human waste, meaning the market offers excellent growth and development potential.
The UK already has many successful Biomass schemes in operation including CHP and Energy from Waste such as the SITA Teesside EFW plant. However, with the 2020 deadline drawing ever closer, it may not be a question of should we increase investment in our Biomass Industry, but simply by how much and how quickly?
