SCOPE & DIMENSION OF ROLE

The Laboratory/Operations assistant is responsible to cover annual leave and illness cover as required by the business (mimimum 50 days per annum). The role covers both the Laboratory Assistant cover as well as the Operations Technician's.

The Laboratory Assistant cover is to assist the Scientists in ensuring the laboratories are kept full of clean glassware and solvents are stocked fully at all times.

To ensure that all PPE is maintained and sent to the cleaner's weekly and distributed back to the laboratories as required.

All work is to be carried out to the client's health and safety policies and SOP's in place.

All work is to high GMP standards and is subject to GMP and GCP regulatory inspections.

The Operations Technician cover is a multi purpose role responsible for the assistance of receipt and distribution of incoming materials, which includes all purchased goods such as chemicals, gases, liquid nitrogen, and dry ice.

Also has responsibility for collection of bio-hazard/solvent waste and recyclable materials from lab areas. Responsibilities within the Facilities dept. include weekly shower flush of the lab emergency showers, distribution and collection of daily post, receiving food/catering/food deliveries and putting away, meeting room set ups etc. The role requires a high degree of communication with numerous people in various departments, and a flexible attitude as priorities change. Requires no day-to-day supervision. Has complete responsibility for certain functions unless stated otherwise.

KEY CHALLENGES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • All work must be to high levels of accuracy and to a high standard of GMP.
    • Good communication and close working is needed.
    • The work of the laboratories is subject to worldwide inspections including MHRA and FDA - high standards are expected.
    • Maintain awareness of Health and Safety policies and SOP requirements and regulations. Assists with the receipt of all incoming purchased goods and checks for accuracy against packing slips.
    • Administers electronic receiving system to log and verify all purchased goods.
    • Ensures that all auditable paperwork is scanned and/or on file, including delivery packing
    • Assists with the receipt of all bottled gas, liquid Nitrogen and dry ice supplies.
    • Packaging, documentation and monitoring of outgoing shipments, including chemical and biological samples and booking courier collections.
    • Responsible for the supply of waste bins and for the daily collection of clinical, solvent and hazardous chemical waste from laboratories.
    • Responsible for the collection of cardboard rubbish from laboratory areas.
    • Assists lab technicians in placing orders to replenish lab stock levels.
    • Assists with some general maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
    • Responsible for distribution of post deliveries, and collection of Post in the afternoon.
    • Assists Facilities Technician with all food/catering/fruit deliveries, delivering/putting away in relevant locations.
    • Assists Facilities Technician with meeting room set-ups.
    • Responsible for weekly shower flush of all laboratory emergency showers.
    • Assists Snr Facilities Technician with any duties required.
  • Other duties as directed by the Laboratory Services Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • Full training is provided
  • Previous experience in stores/laboratory environment, including good EHS practice.
  • Mature attitude with ability to use own initiative.
  • Experience in receiving and stock management.

SKILLS & COMPETENCES:

    • A thorough detailed approach, able to produce and complete documentation to high degree of accuracy.
    • Self-motivation to plan own workload and meet deadlines
    • Good computer skills
    • Good English and maths literacy
  • Possesses excellent technical competency with the electronic receiving database.
  • Exhibits responsible ability to work independently and effectively
  • Displays excellent self-organising, multi-tasking skills and ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Demonstrates good accuracy level in all recording activities and is very diligent in filing of receipts and regulatory documentation
  • Excellent communication skills with delivery personnel and customers, and confidence to report any operational/safety deviation from set protocols by site personnel
