Senior Scientist - Synthetic Biology
Working within the realms of one of the emerging sciences, this opportunity will allow you to work at the forefront of Molecular Biology coupled with Synthetic Biology in a highly consultative and entrepreneurial environment. This team is an amalgamation of scientists and engineers from a wide range of industry and discipline.The purpose of the synthetic biology lab is to take the discipline out of the lab, and into real-world environments to be tested across a broad spectrum including cell therapies, medical devices, energy, commercial and agricultural.
Key requirements of the role:
* Acting as part of an integral team who are focused on winning and delivering projects in Synthetic Biology. You will work alongside the Principle Scientist and Safety Officer to provide expert technical guidance to ensure that key projects are executed on time and to the highest quality.* Particularly focusing on using your expert knowledge around E. coli and S. cerevisiae and the genetics of micro-organisms and molecular biology, cell processes, methods used to characterise nucleic acids, metabolites and proteins. * Design, carry-out and record all findings of practical biological experimentation in the lab, with specific reference to DNA contracts for the engineering of bacterial and/or yeast stains, fermentation, culturing, characterisation and transformations. * Project planning and providing technical content to be presented to clients', assisting with strategy around tasks, designing and delivering protocols in the synthetic biology lab. * Providing advice and guidance to more junior members of the team in relation to their own work, to engage them in the development of the strategy and furtherment of the 'big picture'.Person specification:
* PhD in Molecular Biology or a similar biology focused discipline with strong relevance to synthetic biology. * Proven and demonstrable background working with lab techniques such as: HPLC, microscopy, NGS, GC-MS, fluorescence and use of bioinformatics tools used for DNA construct design, data analysis and experimental design. * Ideally you'll have worked within any of the following areas relevant to synthetic biology such as: gene editing and design, cloning, cell transformation, cell culture, sequencing, assay development, fermentation, purification and culture scale-up.* Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills with an ability to engage both your team and the wider business community.* You will have working knowledge of automation tools, software tools and particularly synthetic biology system design and characterisation.
