Surface Chemist - Molecular Diagnostics

My client, the inventors of semiconductor-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, are developing a revolutionary new NGS-based diagnostic platform in an easy-to-use, cartridge-based system designed to generate a clinically actionable result direct from clinical specimen, in a matter of hours.
They are looking to hire a Surface Chemist to work with the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) development team and will be responsible for a subset of the team deliverables, comprising technology development of a massively parallel sequencing process performed on an integrated circuit (chip). The on-chip process must be compatible with cartridge-based automation and performance must meet the demanding requirements of the novel NGS platform.
Specific responsibilities of the Surface Chemist include;
- Development of new and novel functionalized surfaces for use in the Next-Generation Sequencing platform
- Design and execution of laboratory experiments and in-depth analysis of resulting data
- Interfacing with external partners to develop key platform components
- Management of the work of 1-2 Research Assistants.
- Literature (including patent) work to support development of the technology
- Proactive interaction with other NGS platform teams to assure effective communication and proper alignment of input/output requirements
- Participation in the integration of the technology into the automated platform
- Generation and management of all required documentation and presentation of results

Qualifications and experience
- PhD (preferred) or MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, materials science or related field
- Experience developing surface attachment chemistries related to the immobilisation of biomolecules (e.g. nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes) ideally as a part of an NGS workflow, IVD device, or microarray technology
- Experience with nucleic acid amplification (PCR or non-PCR, such as isothermal), including solid-phase amplification methods
- Experience developing methods for surface characterisation and using techniques such as XPS, dynamic light scattering, SEM, and fluorescence microscopy
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent administrative, organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Industry experience in the development of molecular IVD technology for commercially relevant applications, particularly NGS-based products
- Assay integration experience, including reagent stabilisation
- Experience managing small teams of technicians and/or Research Assistants
- Demonstrable creativity and innovation (e.g. as evidenced by patent filings and allowances and/or scientific publications)
