Job Description - R&D Manager

Reporting to Chief Product Officer

Location: Oxfordshire

Job Type Full time, permanent

Salary :50000 - 65000 per annum

Role Profile

We are looking for an experienced R&D Manager with significant experience leading the new product development function and possessing a strong background in chemistry or electrochemistry. The successful candidate will lead and manage the R&D team which comprises the laboratory, microbiological testing and applications functions.

Key Requirements for the role include:

  • Manage and lead all R&D activities
  • Lead one or more R&D projects in line with agreed development plan
  • Manage and develop a small but growing team of scientists
  • Supervise development of projects utilising expertise in electrochemistry and formulation development to ensure achievement of key milestones whilst maintaining a high quality standards
  • Plan and coordinate daily activities of the R&D team driving a high standard of documentation and analysis
  • Lead scale up and optimisation of new products ensuring a smooth transition of technology to field trials
  • Develop a strong collaborative relationship with other internal functional heads and foster an environment of knowledge gathering and sharing Demonstrate hands on experience of leading R&D trials at customer facilities
  • Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures especially relating to product development and Health and Safety
  • Conduct risk assessments and COSHH assessments within R&D
  • Provide regular project updates on progress to the line manager, business leaders or board members as required
  • Develop a strong regulatory compliance understanding especially with respect to UK /
  • EU legislation pertaining to biocidal products
  • Represent the company at external meetings as a source of technical expertise

Candidate profile

  • R&D manager with strong leadership and management experience
  • Proven technical leadership skills with experience utilizing scientific principles to develop and improve products and /or validate processes
  • Proven new product development experience taking novel concepts to commercial
  • Strong problem-solving capability, analytical and strategic mindset
  • A self-reliant, results orientated, energetic, flexible individual with a strong team bias
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to present complex technical information and methodologies accurately and eloquently to a non-technical audience
  • Interest in the deployment of technologies design to lower the carbon footprint of industry sectors such as the Food industry
  • Qualifications and Experience Required
  • BSc Chemistry or equivalent subject
  • Industrial experience within the chemicals or related industry


  • MSc or PhD Chemistry, electrochemistry, corrosion or related subject
  • Electrochemistry ideally with strong understanding of low cells
  • Statistical Design of Experiments
  • Experience of EU Biocidal regulations
